An important section of the dissertation is the literature review. In order to prepare your thesis statement you must be well acquainted with the background information. Hence you must look up all the relevant case studies, books, articles, journals, other dissertations, papers, documentation etc regarding the same. Remember that it isn’t enough to just summarise the content of these sources. You must judge their relevance and their quality in a manner similar to that in a critical essay.
A dissertation will require you to be strong in either qualitative or quantitative analysis. For instance, consider a dissertation on the impact of an AIDS related documentary on the use of condoms by a particular group. Now a researcher weak in qualitative analysis would survey the group before and after the screening and use that as a basis for drawing conclusions in psychology dissertations. In contrast, an adept researcher would structure a control group experiments i.e. s/he would divide the group into two sub-groups. One sub-group would see the documentary and the other would not. Both groups would be surveyed before and after the screening event and perhaps the researcher would even follow up with another survey after a few weeks/ months to check if the sub-group that had seen the documentary eventually reverted to the attitude/behaviour displayed by the sub-group that did not see it. Obviously, the two-sub-groups would not have any contact with each other during this period. In fact they may even be situated in different locations. The control group method has several advantages:
- Shows whether any change on the sub-group that has viewed the documentary is due the documentary viewing or a result of external factors such as a media blitz regarding the fallout of promiscuous behaviour
- Helps measure the effect of the change over time in an accurate manner
- Makes the analysis results more credible
Similarly for quantitative analysis in a psychology dissertation you need to use the appropriate statistical tools. For instance, for drug addiction among working professionals, stratified sampling (on the basis of hierarchy or career sector) would be a better technique that plain random sampling, as explained in the post on dissertation research.
The reason the analysis is so important is because the methodology section of the dissertation requires you to state the research methods used by you and the reasons for the same. Hence you must be clear about why you have used a particular method and its merits vis-à-vis other methods, perhaps by citing literature on the same. You could even conduct a pilot study to judge the success of the chosen method in measuring a particular aspect.
