The Juilliard School was founded in 1905 as the Institute of Musical Art. A wealthy textile merchant Augustus Juilliard bequeathed a lot of money to promote the study of music across the country. His money helped to establish the Juilliard Graduate School in 1924, which merged with the Institute of Musical Art in 1924 to form the Juilliard School.
